____________________________________________________ Karate Wisdom HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! ____________________________________________________ School News for December Scroll to bottom of page for cool links and Past News The Club has been sponsoring our FREE "Bad-Girls" self defense classes for teen girls and they have been fun so far. Although, Sensei Sean suspects that half the girls only show up to beat up Joel... Come back in January for the CKC Student Homepages! The Club is going to attend a tournament on the weekend of February 24th. Attendance is not mandatory, but recommended for orange belts and above. We will be taking a vote on whether to attend the Fumio Demura Tourney or the California Adventure one! Sensei Erik Akutagawa and Master Robert Temple both stopped by in November and visited our school. In January, we are going to have a field trip to Erik's dojo! Master Burt Maben will be coming by in the Spring for a kumite seminar. We will let you know the exact date soon! We are continuing our referral system of "Get a friend to sign up, get a month free." The CKC referrals have not only made us the fastest growing dojo on the West Side! In January, we will be completing our consumer page for Club members who own businesses and would like to advertise them for free, as well as links to community services and a "Consumer-BEWARE" section. PAST NEWS Click and visit the CKC discussion room - finally up and running again!! Sensei Sean and Sensei Shelly tied the knot in a small ceremony on August 30th, 2001! The two have a new home together and Sensei Sean is already turning the garage into his karate room! Congrats to Angel, one of the karate club's favorite gals has joined the Navy and shipped out today on October 1st! Good luck Angel!! Water classes in August were a blast! Sorry though, no more until next summer ! CONTEST! All students who get a friend to take a class between now and Halloween will receive an entry into a raffle for a $100 gift certificate at the karate store! Sensei Sean and Sensei Shelly finally did it! One July 4th in New Orleans, right after the fireworks grand finale on the banks of the Mississippi, they got engaged to me married! Sensei Sean went to visit Master Burt Maben and worked on kata and kumite this past July in New Orleans and came back with some great stuff to teach the students of the club! Out karate demo went great on 7/29 and our demo team will defintely be seen again on a stage near you!! CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEW GREEN BELTS! EDWIN MEIJIA, SHANNON SMITH, MILES BLACKWELL, MATTHEW SMITH FUN IN THE SUN: Water Class, Beach Class and for the teens - BOOTCAMP, are some of the special summer classes will be having this summer! SUMMER FREEBIES: Remeber that any student who gets a friend to sign up this summer will receive their choice of a FREE month of karate OR a FREE private lesson with Sensei Sean. Did you remember? May tuition was due on 5/28. See Sensei Sean if you are unsure of what your family pays on the new billing system. Move over Shaq and Kobe! The Laker's season is nearly over and since so many enjoyed the Dodgers' game we attended, we are going to have a school trip to see the LA Sparks play this July. See Sensei Sean to reserve tickets for your family! On Tuesday, April 23 Sensei Sean and Pastor Michael Gutierrez had a chance to meet with Senator Kuel's aide, Loren Griffith, up in Sacramento. Sensei Sean had a chance to tell him about how awesome our kids are and we are hoping the Senator will give the CKC her support. We also lobbied for Tenant and worker rights in Santa Monica as well as education and tax cuts in California. The California Karate Club was accepted as a a part of Master Willie Adams International Karate Organization, K.I.A.I. (Karate Association of Isshin-Ryu International), we are now the only West Coast school that is accredited by both that organization and the OIKKA (Okinawan Karate and Kobudo Organiation). Student Appreciation night is on Monday May 7! But not at the dojo, no, we have 80 tickets for CKC students and families to the DODGERS GAME at Dodger Stadium! Go Dodgers! IF you have not been aro0und in a while, come and see the newly remodeled Center - A big thanks to EVA MACIAS and SABRINA DEL REAL for the amazing design job Master Burton Maben visited the dojo from 3/17 - 3/25 and did a seminar in 3/18 "Tokumine no Kun bo" and "The Art of Kumite." It was a success thanks to our stuednts and especially Sensei Brian Hawkins and Sensei Erik Akutagawa! Sensei Sean went up North with Master Maben to the West Coast karate classic where met up with Grandmasters Willie Adams and Toby Cooling and did some great karate on the weekend of 3/24! May 19 is going to be the BIG TEST DAY for many cuurent studetns to theri next belt rank - practice hard!!!! Sensei Sean did not spend Valentine's Day with Sensei Shelly like he should have this year (The things she up with!), but went to Palm Springs to visit GrandMaster Willie Adams (9th degree black belt) who was in town for a seminar. We worked the katas, basics and talked a lot about running a dojo and Master Adams talked a lot with Sensei Sean about making the CKC best it can be!! Sensei Sean also tavelled to New Orleans to meet and study with Master Burt Maben, a former nationally and internationally rated "Top 10" fighter. We worked the katas as well as kumite and of course a lot of good ol' cajun food! Sensei Burt is coming to teach at the the dojo from 3/17 - 3/25!!! We look forward to it!! Well, things have been amazing since we opened our program! Remember that our school is just that, OUR school! It is about community and our success thus far is not because of Sensei Sean, but you - the students of the CKC, God bless all of you! Any student who gets a friend to sign up will receive a month of FREE Karate!!! Parents who are interested in trying it out will receive a special discount as well. Now that March is here, we are beginning to practice for demonstrations and competitions for any students who want to do either one! ANY STUDENT is welcome to be on the teams and can ask Sensei Sean to join at any time! We still need a name for the team as well!! In December, 2000, Master Toby Cooling, flew into California to teach the Southern California black belts and go over kata with them! There were several of us at Sensei Gary Norris' dojo in San Diego and it was a great time! Copies of the video we made are available to students upon request. In February Sensei Sean will be going to visit Master Burt Maben in New Orleans and Master, Willie Adams from Detroit. The CKC Friends' Page is now open for any student's use.
